AMD Trinity laptop review roundup: beats Ivy Bridge on gaming, but CPU lets the herd down

AMD Trinity laptop review roundup: beats Ivy Bridge on gaming, but CPU lets the herd down

If you've been following AMD's game plan over the last couple of years, then you probably won't be totally shocked by what follows. That said, reviewers' verdicts of the new high-end Trinity laptop APU, the 2.3GHz quad-core A10-4600M, do include some dizzying highs and despairing lows, which are still kinda surprising in their own way. Like how? Well, HotHardware found that AMD's chip beats Intel's Ivy Bridge (with integrated HD 4000 graphics) by 30 to 50 percent in some games, albeit with a few stumbles over immature DX11 drivers. Similarly, AnandTech's handy table above shows just how far ahead Trinity is across fifteen common titles. On the other hand, most reviewers found that non-gaming CPU performance fell far short of Ivy Bridge and even Sandy Bridge mobile chips. For example, Hexus's Geekbench scores put the APU 40 percent behind last year's Dell XPS 15z, which is totally underwhelming. So, as usual, it'll all depend on what you need a laptop for -- but if you're after something that costs $699 or less, handles regular day-to-day tasks okay and can also play current games with decent frame-rates, then you'll be keen to conduct further research at the links below.

How To Control The Position Of The On-Screen Cursor On iPhone The Easy Way Using Swipe Gestures

Advertisements

It seems that iOS-based text editing tweaks for jailbroken devices can be compared to London buses, they keep you waiting for significant periods of time and all of a sudden two of them would show up at the same time. That is the exact same thing which has recently happened in Cydia with the release of the SwipeShiftCaret tweak as well as the SwipeSelection offering.

Both packages are available to download free of charge from Cydia and both seem to have been built with exactly the same end goal in mind ? to make text editing on an iOS device more user friendly and accessible. SwipeShiftCaret comes from developer r_plus and makes itself nice and comfortable in any area of iOS that allows text to be entered and edited by the user.

In a stock installation of Apple?s mobile operating system, selecting, highlighting and editing text has proved to be somewhat cumbersome and difficult to use at times. Especially for those who may suffer from having slightly chubby fingers. This particular problem with the OS has been highlighted recently thanks to a concept video that has been doing the rounds, and SwipeShiftCaret seems to implement the recommended suggestions extremely well.

Once installed, SwipeShiftCaret doesn?t append the home screen with any additional app icons but does give itself its own little nest within the native Settings bundle. The tweak settings allow one aspect of the installation to be configured, which relates to the continual moving aspect of the character spacing caret. The package itself brings three individual features to iOS text editing, which are; being able to move the spacing caret with a simple drag gesture of the finger or move the caret in a continual motion by dragging slowly along the text string.

The final offering, and perhaps the most useful one, is being able to depress the shift key on the virtual keyboard and drag along the string of text to be able to highlight it. This simple drag gesture is something which replaces the previous method of pressing-and-holding and then having to manipulate those little blue pins that appear on the selected text.

SwipeShiftCaret is available as a free of charge download from the BigBoss repository and requires a jailbroken device running iOS 5.0 or above.

Rovio makes a Mighty Eagle's $68 million in profit in financial squawk

Image

It's inspired artwork, sketch shows and even a Pomplamoose cover, but flinging feathery fowl is ultimately a serious business. Rovio has announced that in 2011, it made a huge $106.3 million turnover and a whopping $67.6 million in profit (before tax). Fueled by the success of Angry Birds, Seasons and Rio, the company grew by a factor of eight in the last year, from 28 employees all the way to 224. The company adds that the three games were downloaded 648 million times and are now used by 200 million daily users, while sales of merchandise contributed to around 30 percent of the total revenue. The report adds that the only barrier to future profits is if people stop buying new smartphones, but we're not sure that's likely to be the case for a while.

Justin Bieber is ready to be your "Boyfriend." The singer will sit down with MTV News' Sway Calloway on Thursday (May 3) to premiere his highly anticipated music video for the single during "MTV First: Justin Bieber" live at 7:50 p.m. ET on MTV.

After the video premieres on air, Bieber will chat with Sway for 30 minutes on MTV.com, opening up about the Director X-directed clip, as well as his June 19 album release, Believe. But that's not all: If you have a burning question for Bieber, you can get in on the fun by commenting below or tweeting @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskBieber.

Immediately following the premiere, the "Boyfriend" video will be available on MTV.com so Beliebers can watch it over and over and over again.

"Boyfriend," the lead single from Believe, was co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner and Mason Levy. The track stormed radio and the charts back in March, reaching #2 on Billboard's Hot 100.

Bieber was spotted in Los Angeles last month shooting some scenes for the video. He was photographed kissing a brunette who looked a lot like his real-life lady love, Selena Gomez, and was also driving some high-end muscle cars.

"The reaction's been great [to 'Boyfriend']; not only have I got good reactions from my fans, but great reactions from people who, you know, [might not usually listen to my music]. I've gotten messages like 'You know, I never would have listened to Justin and now I love this song,' " he told MTV News about the track. "So it's really great feedback."

While Bieber rides solo on "Boyfriend," he's enlisted a number of his A-list pals to appear on Believe, including Usher, Kanye West, Drake and perhaps even Lil Wayne. Just last week, Bieber dropped the artwork for the album, which features a close-up of the pop star's face and the collar of his studded jacket.

Don't miss the "Boyfriend" video premiere Thursday, May 3, at 7:50 p.m. ET/PT on MTV during "MTV First: Justin Bieber," followed by a live Q&A with Justin himself on MTV.com!

Commercial real estate on upswing for Birmingham's Graham & Co.

GrahamCo.jpg

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama ? Graham Co. had 15 property sales for $12.6 million and 33 leases worth $8.1 million in the first quarter of 2012, confirming the company?s expectations for the commercial real estate market coming off a strong two quarters at the end of 2011.

?The opening quarter activity is typically the slowest as year-end deals are completed giving a pop to the year-end,? said Sonny Culp, broker and senior vice president at Graham.

Culp said Graham had three sales and 11 leases in March to end the quarter.

One of the sales was the Children?s Aid Society?s purchase of the 17,350-square-foot former Bodine corporate office and 50 parking spaces at 214 14th Ave. South for its new offices, after the asking price on the building was reduced from $1.6 million to $1.35 million. Graham?s Sam Carroll represented the seller; Corporate Realty Services represented the buyer.

The new owners plan a major renovation.

In another transaction, Graham?s Ogden Deaton represented the seller of 152 acres off Interstate 59 and Alabama 174 in St. Clair County near Springville to SBE Development for $1.7 million.

Deaton said the buyer is a group that owns the adjacent land. He said the group has not announced plans for the property, but the acreage purchased ?is adjacent to the interstate and on ramp and gives them better access for their future development.?

Graham?s Jack Brown brokered Dexter Fortson Associates Inc.?s purchase of a 12,480-square-foot industrial building at 5541 Powder Plant Lane in Bessemer. DFA manufactures and services equipment for the utility, manufacturing and coal mining industries.

Among the lease deals Graham completed in March:

? Trio Engineered Products leased 15,000 square feet of industrial space at The Distribution Center in Homewood. Deaton represented the landlord, while Graham?s Jordan Tubb represented the tenant.

? Event Rentals Unlimited Inc. leased 13,000 square feet of industrial space at the Distribution Center in Homewood. Deaton and Graham?s Robin Domit handled the transaction.

? Sanders Hyland Corp., a full service commercial flooring contractor, leased 2,500 square feet of warehouse space at 3433 Lorna Lane. Graham?s Tubb represented the landlord; RealtySouth represented the tenant.

? Advantage Payroll renewed its lease for 3,200 square feet at 3125 Independence Drive in Homewood Plaza. Graham?s Dan Lovell represented the tenant; J.H. Berry and Gilbert represented the landlord.

? Dominion Management finalized plans to remain in 6,500 square feet at the Meadow Brook 1200 building on Corporate Drive. Graham?s Brad Jones represented the landlord.

? HB Logistics, a transportation company, leased 9,000 square feet of office and warehouse space at 1420 Hildegarde Street in Pinson. Brown represented the landlord, and Graham?s John Coleman represented the tenant.

? Birmingham Mobile Inc. leased 5,000 square feet of warehouse space at 1520 Simmsville Road in Alabaster. Coleman represented the tenant; Southpace Properties represented the landlord.

? Hanes Companies renewed its 38,000-square- foot lease at Perimeter Industrial Park in Bessemer. Culp represented Hanes; EGS Commercial Real Estate represented the landlord.

? Mountain Brook Sporting Goods leased 2,500 square feet of office and warehouse space at 3433 Lorna Lane. Tubb represented the landlord.

Culp said commercial companies in the Birmingham area are trying to get more properties sold and leased before new development can be justified. ?Graham and other firms are seeing reduced inventory in some property categories and many landlords are seeing a stabilization of occupancies that point to a positive future,? he said.

He said the rest of 2012 should see that happen, albeit slower than what most would want.

?Our pipeline of sales and leasing activity remains strong,? he said.

Southpace deal

Southpace Properties Inc. said it has completed a building sale in Hoover that will become the new headquarters for Schaeffer Eye Center.

Southpace?s Bill McDavid represented the owner of the 36,000-square-foot former RoomStore Furniture building at 1686 Montgomery Highway in a sale to Schaeffer Properties LLC, which was represented by Bill Clements of Retail Specialists.

Clements said Schaeffer, which operates a chain of optometry and eye care facilities and sponsors the annual Crawfish Boil music festival in Birmingham, plans to use the top floor of the building for its corporate offices and the ground floor for clinical and retail space.
