Coffee at Nordstrom: Long Distance Loving!

Hi, I'm Stephanie from The Midwest Prep! I seriously could not be any happier that Crystal !!!!! asked me to guest blog for her while she is whisked away on her honeymoon. So happy for one of my blog BFFs!!!

Crystal and I first began talking because we have so much in common. First off, both of our boy's names is Matthew. Weird right? The other big thing is that we have both been battling long distance relationships for years. I am the first to know how difficult it is to be miles away from my boyfriend. I've actually been doing it for almost 5 years now. It is absolutely crazy that we've made it work for that long. It's not easy not being able to end every night with your boyfriend and just have them there physically for you. I'm so so so glad Crystal can finally end her long distance trek with Matthew and spend the rest of her life next to his side.

So that leads to me giving y'all some tips about how to handle a long distance relationship. Let me remind you, I am no expert and you can take my advice at face value. :)

1. Trust, trust, trust.

It is so very important to trust one another. Your relationship will fall apart very quickly if you don't trust that the love you two have will keep you strong. I'm so guilty of this and have driven myself crazy when I was younger by creating all of these crazy situations in my head. I have learned that you just have to trust your man. I know it's hard to trust those other girls out there and whether or not they are 'hitting' on your man but trust me, men turn down those type of women for a reason. :)

2. Communication is key.

This is very trivial. You probably think I'm pretty darn stupid for even having to state it but it's important! You don't get the luxury of seeing him everyday so the next best thing is talking, texting, skyping, face-timing, anything! I often struggle with what is enough talking and what's not enough but I have realized that it doesn't matter day-by-day. Talk enough to make each other happy. Since you don't get to physically see one another every day, communicate so you can be as much of a part of each other's lives as possible!

3. Be positive

I find this extremely important. Whenever I'm in a bad mood, I tend to bring down Matthew with me which usually leads to an argument of some sort. And we all know how fun those are when you're miles apart. (THEY SUCK!) So staying positive can really keep both of you happy as well as your relationship. :)

4. Keep the future in mind

I know the future can be very scary but in a long distance relationship, it's extra important. You want to make sure your time apart is worth it. Don't spend time miles away from someone who you don't see yourself with for the next few years. You're wasting your own time as well as your significant other's. Make sure that you see yourself living with this person down the road and destroying the distance part of your relationship! It's important to have a similar "end goal" of your relationship which usually leads to one partner relocating to be with the other. :)

5. Live your life!

Make sure you still have fun when your partner/boyfriend isn't visiting you. Keep your friends and family just as close because you'll need them to lean on when you're having a bad day and your man isn't around! I've seen far too many girls who wrap themselves up in a relationship and ruin so many friendships over it. It's not worth it! Plus it's totally possible to have the best of both worlds. Heck, long distance relationships specifically allow you to do that! You have plenty of time to yourself/with friends yet still are able to have intimate time with your lover. :)

I know a lot of readers are in LDR so please feel free to contact me over at my blog if you ever need to talk. It's so great that so many bloggers are in LDR because we have each other to lean on/vent to when need be for an unbiased opinion/advice.

Have a great day y'all! :)

Olympic torch starts 5-day Northern Ireland tour

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) ? The Olympic torch began its five-day tour of Northern Ireland with plenty of excitement and no signs of trouble Sunday as the territory's Protestants and Catholics vowed to show the world how united the community has become after four decades of conflict.

Police warned of extra security to deter any of the region's small Irish Republican Army factions ? still trying to undermine a broadly successful peace process with guns and bombs ? from trying to disrupt the event.

But the Olympic torch proceeded from Belfast's Titanic Quarter to the prosperous belt of towns along the County Down coast with no unusual security evident. Just as during its first two weeks on British soil in England and Wales, the crowds were free to stand beside the passing torchbearer, who was flanked by four to six tracksuit-clad security staff jogging alongside.

Between stops, a Northern Ireland police motorcycle unit used to protecting VIPs sped ahead to block roads and ensure the torch convoy of more than a dozen vehicles carrying support staff and media stuck to its ambitious schedule to reach every corner of this province of 1.7 million by Thursday.

Sinn Fein, the Irish nationalist party that long supported IRA attacks but today helps govern Northern Ireland alongside its British Protestant majority, said all of Ireland was excited to see the symbol of the 2012 London Games arrive. The flame will cross the border Wednesday into the Republic of Ireland to tour Dublin, a special concession to demonstrate today's exceptionally strong British-Irish relations and cooperation between the two governments on the island of Ireland.

"The all-Ireland torch relay is a celebration of sport, culture and our local heroes. This really is our opportunity to shine and showcase our cities, beautiful scenery and most of all the people who live here," said Caral Ni Chuilin, the Sinn Fein sports minister for Northern Ireland.

Sunday's torch run started at dawn in the Belfast docklands where the city's most infamous export, the Titanic, was built a century ago. It headed east to Holywood, best known as the hometown of top-ranked golfer Rory McIlroy, then to the port of Bangor, the major town of a stretch of coastline known as the Gold Coast because of its reputation for comfort and affluence.

Along the sidewalks, sometimes the crowds of spectators grew to five deep in the hearts of town, but more often the torchbearer was able to wave to single groups of people cheering, whistling, hooting ? or occasionally still rubbing sleep out of their eyes, bathrobes on, coffee mugs in hand.

The torch spends the rest of Sunday visiting Stormont Parliamentary Building, the base for Northern Ireland's 5-year-old unity government, then showcasing some of the province's most spectacular scenery along the coast north past glacier-carved forest glens and the Giants Causeway, with its strange carpet of hexagonal rocks running down to the Atlantic waves.

As the torch passed through predominantly Protestant towns east of Belfast, the locals' loyalties were on display, with many waving British flags adorned with images of Queen Elizabeth II. Much of the torch's later route goes through predominantly Irish Catholic turf, including areas where IRA extremists still committed to the idea of overthrowing Northern Ireland by force live.

Underscoring the threat, a suspected IRA activist tossed a grenade at a police unit Saturday in Northern Ireland's second-largest city, Londonderry, where the Olympic cavalcade will spend parts of Monday and Tuesday. The police, who were searching a property at the time, weren't injured but their vehicle suffered heavy shrapnel damage.

In Belfast a police deputy commander, Assistant Chief Constable Alistair Finlay, said the Northern Ireland public would see heavy deployments of officers both along the Olympic torch routes and at events associated with the queen's Diamond Jubilee, also being celebrated this weekend. He said IRA splinter groups "will take any opportunity to cause disruption."

He said people might find roads blocked, and other unexpected security delays. "We are taking these steps to keep communities and their officers safe. We would not do this if it was not absolutely necessary to protect life," Finlay said.

Several spectators said they doubted that any IRA splinter group would seriously disrupt the torch run. They said even if Irish republican extremists tried something, Northern Ireland's people were determined to keep partying anyway.

"We're not going to let that crowd of morons ruin our day. They represent zero-point-zero of the population. This is the real Northern Ireland," said Gareth Wilson, 35, standing with his wife and two sons by the roadside with cell phones in hand, each snapping pictures as the torch cavalcade passed.

Rage as Egypt's Mubarak is spared the gallows

Thousands of angry protesters across Egypt took to the streets after ex-president Hosni Mubarak and his security chief were given life in prison over the deaths of protesters in 2011 but six police chiefs were acquitted.

Mubarak, the only autocrat toppled in the Arab Spring to be put in the dock, could have been sent to the gallows as demanded by the prosecution.

Both the toppled dictator's defence team and lawyers representing his victims said the verdict could easily be appealed.

The verdict prompted outrage inside and outside the courtroom, with protesters staging rallies in Cairo, Alexandria and other Egyptian cities.

"Either we get justice for our martyrs or we die like them!" chanted those gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

The Muslim Brotherhood's presidential candidate Mohammed Mursi said the revolution must continue.

"All of us, my brothers, must realise in this period that the continuation of the revolution, and the revolutionaries' staying put in their positions in the squares, is the only guarantee to achieve the goals," he told reporters before joining the crowds in Tahrir Square for around 15 minutes.

Judge Ahmed Refaat sentenced Mubarak, 84, and his interior minister Habib al-Adly to life for their role in the deaths of more than 800 protesters during the revolt that ousted them, but acquitted the six security commanders on the same charges.

A senior member of Mubarak's defence team told AFP the former strongman will appeal.

A tearful Mubarak, who enjoyed near absolute power for three decades, was flown to Tora prison on Cairo's outskirts after the verdict but then refused to leave the aircraft.

A security official said Mubarak "suffered from a surprise health crisis" but was finally convinced to return to his cell.

Chants of "Void, void" and "The people want the judiciary purged" erupted after the sentencing, as furious lawyers told AFP they feared Mubarak would be found innocent on appeal.

The powerful Muslim Brotherhood told AFP it had called for mass protests nationwide, while other groups including the pro-democracy April 6 movement announced they would also hold demonstrations.

Offices of presidential candidate Ahmad Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, were attacked early Sunday in two provincial towns, a security services official said.

Shafiq's campaign headquarters in Cairo had already been attacked on Monday.

Thousands marched on Tahrir Square, epicentre of the protests that toppled Mubarak, chanting against the judiciary and the military council that took power when he quit.

There were similar rallies in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and other parts of Egypt, where many were in shock at the police chiefs' acquittal.

Rights groups also slammed the verdict.

Mubarak's sentence "is a significant step towards combatting long-standing impunity in Egypt" but the security chiefs' acquittal "leaves many still waiting for full justice," Amnesty International said.

"Many see the acquittal of all the senior security officials as a sign that those responsible for human rights violations can still escape justice."

Human Rights Watch Cairo-based researcher Heba Morayef told AFP "the verdict fails to deliver justice, it fails to deter police from future abuse and it comes against the backdrop of acquittals in police trials."

Corruption charges against Mubarak's sons, Alaa and Gamal, were dropped because of the expiry of a statute of limitations, and the ex-president was acquitted in one of the graft cases.

But Alaa and Gamal will stay in prison because they are on trial in another case.

"We will appeal. The ruling is full of legal flaws from every angle," Yasser Bahr, a senior member of Mubarak's defence team, told AFP.

"We will win, one million percent," he added.

Mubarak, in dark sunglasses and wearing a beige track-suit, had his arms folded and showed no emotion inside the caged dock as Refaat read the verdict.

His sons, however, appeared close to tears.

"It's vindicating to Egyptians to see Mubarak and his interior minister sentenced to life, but the verdict raises more questions than answers," said Hossam Bahgat, the director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights.

"The court appears to have found no evidence that the killings were committed by policemen. It seems the court convicted Mubarak and Adly for failing to prevent the killings," Bahgat told AFP.

"It's 100 percent certain that this will go to appeal and the court is very likely to order a retrial."

In delivering the ruling, Refaat painted a grim picture of life under Mubarak, listing hardship after hardship during his three-decade rule.

Refaat said the protesters who joined the uprising were "peaceful" and wanted only "justice, freedom and democracy."

Clashes erupted outside the courtroom after the sentencing, with police using stun grenades against angry crowds.

Mubarak, Adly and the six others had faced charges over their involvement in ordering the deaths of some of the estimated 850 people killed in the uprising.

Egypt has been ruled by the military since Mubarak was forced out on February 11 last year after 18 days of nationwide protest.

Mubarak was held at a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh following his arrest, before the military appeared to bow to protester demands that he and ex-regime officials face trial.

The trial began on August 3 last year, and Mubarak has been held in Cairo ever since.

The military insists that the prosecution case and charges were independent judicial decisions, but critics say the investigation was hasty and sloppy, resulting in a trial based on patchy evidence that may see Mubarak acquitted.

Saturday's verdict comes just two weeks before a presidential election run-off that will pit Mubarak's former premier Shafiq against the Brotherhood's Mursi in a highly polarised race.

It is the first openly contested presidential election in any of the Arab countries swept by protests and uprisings challenging decades of autocratic rule.
