Polar Plunge Benefits Homeless Pets - St. Louis News & Weather from

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) -? It?s a cause for pause, four paws that is. On Tuesday 45 like minded pet lovers and thrill seekers gathered at Gordon Moore Park to raise money for the Hope Rescues Animal Shelter.

?You go under and you run out and you won?t be able to think straight for a minute.? You can?t feel your hands and feet but after about five minutes you start to feel back to normal.? said Co-organizer Trisha Cruz.

I know what you?re thinking.? Why would anyone want to take off most of their clothes and go jump in a frozen lake?

?For the animals, you know last year we raised around $4,000 in ten minutes.? said Trisha Cruz.

?This year they will raise more than $5,000. That?s why these frozen folks were willing to plunge for their pooch, take a dive for a dog or getting frozen for man?s best friend.
? ?
?It?s refreshing New Year?s Day after having a couple of? cocktails.? It wakes you up and gets you going for the New Year.? said Co-organizer Alison Dreith.

You might call it one of those ice cold bucket list type of things.

Familiar face to welcome Sandy Hook students back to school

When the students at Sandy Hook Elementary School arrive at their new building Thursday, a familiar face will be there to greet them ? their "new old principal."

Donna Page (pronounced Pa-jhay), the school's former principal, is leading the new school as interim principal, telling parents it was her "calling" to return after the tragedy. Parents have dubbed her the "new old principal" because Page was the school's leader for 14 years before retiring in 2010.

The school's principal Dawn Hochsprung was among the first victims of Adam Lanza's Dec. 14 rampage that left 20 children and six school staffers dead.

Once the Sandy Hook school had established that they would be able to use the former Chalk Hill Middle School building in nearby Monroe, Conn., parents knew that next biggest obstacle would be finding someone to lead the school through such a traumatic time.

"The next piece of the puzzle was, okay who is going to take the reins here? Who could possibly come in and fill Dawn Hochsprung's shoes?" parent Karen Dryer told ABCNews.com. "She was a truly amazing leader and friend. I worked very closely with her."

Dryer is a classroom volunteer in her 5-year-old son's kindergarten class at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and she has been helping the school prepare for Opening Day, as they call it, at the new building.

"We didn't think it was possible until we got a voicemail from Donna reintroducing herself and saying that when she heard [about the shooting] she knew it was the calling that she needed to come out of retirement and take the position of head of school," Dryer said.

"I started crying when I heard the message. It's still emotional," Dryer said and she cried again remembering the moment. "It was such a blessing and such an amazing relief because it was like, 'Oh my, now we can breathe. They're going to be okay.'"

Dryer's daughter, now a high school sophomore, was a student at the school when Page was principal and she knows her well.

"She's amazing. She's an extremely strong woman," Dryer said. "She is the perfect person to come in and take control and lead this school and staff forward."

"She could be a tough one, but she does everything completely out of love. That's why she stepped forward and came out of retirement. She loves the school, she loves the staff. The staff all know her and respect her and she knows a lot of the kids because she only just retired a couple of years ago."

Page has quickly stepped into her old position, taking charge by helming the round-the-clock effort to prepare the new building.

"I want parents and families enduring the loss of their precious children to know their loved ones are foremost in our hearts and minds as we move forward," Page wrote in a letter to the school community about the first day back to school. "We recognize your needs are paramount in our preparations and planning. Your strength and compassion has been, and will continue to be an inspiration to me and countless others as we work to honor the memory of your precious children and our beloved staff."

Students, families and teachers are participating in an open house today to visit the new school. Classes resume on Thursday.

U.S. House aims to split Sandy aid bill into two parts

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to split a $60.4 billion Superstorm Sandy disaster aid bill into two parts, staging votes on $27 billion to fund immediate recovery needs and $33 billion for long-term and other projects, Republican lawmakers and aides said on Monday.

The plan for votes on Tuesday or Wednesday would meet the demands of many Republican lawmakers to vote on a smaller initial package of aid for victims of the October 29 storm that devastated New York and New Jersey coastlines.

But the House plan still provides members from those states an opportunity to try to drum up support for the full aid package approved by the Senate last week. Details emerged after a House Republican caucus meeting on Monday.

"There's going to be two votes, unless the plan changes - one at $27 billion and one at $33 billion," said Representative Steven LaTourette, a member of the appropriations committee who will retire from Congress when it adjourns on Wednesday.

Should the House fail to pass a Sandy bill by then, the Senate's $60.4 billion measure would expire, and the new Congress that gets sworn in on Thursday would have to start over with new legislation, further delaying the disaster funds.

"If we get into the next Congress, you have to hit the reset button," said Representative Jon Runyan, a New Jersey Republican who added that the Sandy aid package has been largely drowned out in recent days by negotiations over the "fiscal cliff" tax hikes and spending cuts set to kick in starting on Tuesday.

"We're doing everything we can to keep this in the forefront," Runyan added.

Many Republicans in Congress say that the Sandy aid bill contains billions of dollars in spending on projects unrelated to damage caused by the storm or for long-term infrastructure improvements that should compete with other discretionary spending.

Among expenditures criticized was $150 million to rebuild fisheries, including those in the Gulf Coast and Alaska, thousands of miles from Sandy's devastation, and $2 million to repair roof damage that pre-dates the storm on Smithsonian Institution buildings in Washington.

There were few details on which expenditures would be considered immediate disaster needs that would go into the $27 billion portion of the House measure, which is likely to win easier passage.

Senate Republicans tried a similar approach, proposing to shrink the $60.4 billion package to $24 billion for near-term projects, but this was defeated in the Democratic-controlled chamber.

Aides said the New York and New Jersey delegations were working to drum up support for the full package. An aide to a New York area Republican congressman said there appeared to be sufficient Republican support for passage.

Democrats, including New York and New Jersey senators, have argued that long-term rebuilding projects such as tunnel repairs, would be delayed if the full funding was not approved. They say that businesses would not start to rebuild if they were not confident of reimbursement.

Use Your AAA Card for Discounts on Medication

Use Your AAA Card for Discounts on MedicationIf you're a AAA subscriber, you get more benefits than just roadside assistance. According to pharmacist and redditor redheadhappy, you can get discounts on medication as well:

I work at a pharmacy and AAA is the best discount program we use. I will take a certain percentage off the case price of the medication.

This may seem a little absurb, but it's true. AAA actually advertises 50% off, and you can see it pictured above. These discounts seem on par with prescription club memberships that you can get at most drugstores, but if you already pay for AAA for your vehicle you already have those benefits without the additional cost.
