Sanctions give PSU opponents chance to cherry pick

If you are a college football coach in need of a player or two, Penn State's misfortune could turn out to be your team's lucky strike.

There's a blue-and-white plate special going on right now in Happy Valley, and coaches from all over the country are looking at the Nittany Lions' roster like a menu ? even though a hoard of Penn State players have pledged to stick with the school through the tough times.

Illinois coaches were in State College, Pa., to recruit on Wednesday. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters his staff has talked with a couple of Nittany Lions. Baylor coach Art Briles has said his staff was contacted by at least one Penn State player.

Preseason practice starts at Penn State on Aug. 6. The next two weeks could be the most difficult of Bill O'Brien's coaching career as he tries to keep his team together.

NCAA sanctions will keep the Nittany Lions out of a bowl game for the rest of these players' careers, and college sports' governing body is allowing any of them to transfer to another school and get on the field right away.

The only restriction is they cannot practice or play with Penn State this year and still play for another school this season.

Players can transfer and be eligible for next season any time before the start of fall practice in 2013, but O'Brien should know what he has to work with in 2012 on Aug. 6.

And he got some good news on Wednesday.

At least 13 players listed as first-stringers on the preseason depth chart affirmed their commitment to staying in Happy Valley, including senior quarterback Matt McGloin.

"We want to let the nation know that we're proud of who we are," senior fullback Michael Zordich said, flanked by his fellow players early Wednesday morning. "We're the true Penn Staters, and we're going to stick together through this. We're going to see this thing through, and we're going to do everything we can for the university. We know it's not going to be easy, but we know what we're made of."

Neither Zordich nor senior linebacker Michael Mauti ? both sons of former Penn State players ? mentioned former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky by name during the impromptu news conference, where they didn't take any questions after reading a statement.

"We take this as an opportunity to create our own legacy," Mauti said. "This program was not built by one man and it's sure as hell not going to get torn down by one man. This program was built on every alumni, every single player that came before us, built on their backs."

The Nittany Lions can't play in a bowl game until the 2016 season after an unprecedented child sex abuse scandal that shattered the program's image as a place where "success with honor" was the rule. The scholarship reductions they'll receive could make it difficult for O'Brien to field a competitive squad during the next few seasons.

On Twitter, McGloin called the NCAA penalties "extremely harsh."

"I am a Nittany Lion and will remain one," he tweeted. "I believe in the core values I have learned in this program. It is not Nittany Lion Football. It is Nittany Lion family."

Along with Mauti, Zordich, McGloin and Morris, players listed as first-teamers who attended Wednesday included wide receiver Allen Robinson; offensive linemen Donovan Smith, Matt Stankiewitch, John Urschel and Adam Gress; tight end Kyle Carter; defensive linemen DaQuan Jones and Pete Massaro; and cornerback Adrian Amos.

That group includes six seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and two redshirt freshmen.

On Wednesday night, incoming freshman quarterback Steven Bench from Georgia joined the committed, tweeting: "I have decided to stay at Penn State. I promise this team is special and will SHOCK THE WORLD over the next 4 years."

Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said other players had committed to return but were unable to attend Wednesday because of classes or internships.

But some players will weigh whether to transfer, with other schools wooing them. The biggest name is running back Silas Redd, who rushed for 1,241 yards as a sophomore last season. Redd has yet to reveal his plans.

Illinois spokesman Kent Brown confirmed that a group of assistant coaches traveled to State College on Wednesday to talk to some Nittany Lions players. Brown said Illini athletic director Mike Thomas informed Penn State of the trip and that it came after Nittany Lions players contacted the Illini.

Cornerback Stephon Morris, who attended Wednesday's news conference, tweeted: "We have chosen to stay at PSU & other opposing coaches are outside our apartment. Was that the intentions of the NCAA." He added the hashtags "LeaveUsAlone" and "WeAre."

There probably won't be a parade of opposing coaches showing up on the Penn State campus over the next week or so. Most will take a slightly more subtle approach and players can take five official recruiting visits to other schools, just as they did when they were being recruited out of high school.

But it won't be surprising to see some enemy colors around Happy Valley.

O'Brien told ESPN on Wednesday that while opposing coaches needed only to email or fax the compliance department to receive clearance to speak to players, he believed there was a protocol they should follow. O'Brien cited Central Florida's George O'Leary, Syracuse's Doug Marrone and Iowa's Kirk Ferentz as having reached out to him first.

Marrone and O'Brien are close friends from the time they spent working on O'Leary's staff at Georgia Tech.

It's been less than two weeks since an investigation by former FBI director Louis Freeh concluded former coach Joe Paterno and other high-ranking university officials covered up abuse allegations involving Sandusky, who awaits sentencing on charges he abused 10 boys, some of them in team facilities.

In that time, Paterno's bronze likeness has been removed from outside Beaver Stadium and the NCAA imposed harsh sanctions that include a $60 million fine and a four-year bowl ban. The NCAA also erased 14 years of Paterno's victories, stripping him of his standing as the winningest coach in the history of big-time college football.

"No sanction, no politician is ever going to take away what we've got here," Mauti said. "None of that's ever going to tear us apart. Right now all we can do is put our heads down, and we're just going to work. That's all we can do. We're going to fight for Penn State, fight for each other, because this is what Penn State's about ? fighting through adversity."

Soon after the players spoke, Penn State announced that no players would be made available for Big Ten media days, which are Thursday and Friday in Chicago.

Dear Winchester, ?I feel your pain. I've been there too. One morning several years ago, I woke up and realized that my alarm hadn't gone off. The power had been cut off, since I had no idea where the electric bill was, or any of the presumably increasingly frantic notices I'd been getting in the mail. I couldn't find any clean clothes, because the laundry was piled in heaps in the hallways. And as I gazed at it in despair, I realized... something was moving underneath it. Probably one of Silas' pets that had not been fed, and was desperately foraging for pizza crusts. I threw on some dirty clothes, and went to make my kids breakfast, and found the only things in the fridge were a few packets of Kikkoman soy sauce and an old bottle of capers. It wasn't that I didn't know what needed to be done. Or that I lacked the fortitude to do it. I just hadn't had any time lately! So I did what any self-respecting homeschooler would do when faced with an emergency. I rolled up my sleeves and got out my library card!

The very first thing most every book on time management will tell you, is to decide what your goals are in life. ?For most of us homeschoolers, a big one is making amazing learning opportunities happen for our children. ?And having the totally organized, totally spotless home that won't stand in the way! At the time, little Verna was dying to learn all the finer points of animal tracking, namely scat identification, and Silas was just getting into amateur taxidermy. But had we had time to pursue these interests? ?No! ?We'd been stuck in suburbia, where Verna was taking a keen interest in figuring out which neighbor's dog was pooping in our yard, and I didn't like the way Silas was eyeing the neighborhood crazy cat lady's pets. ?I needed to get it together and get them out into ?real nature ASAP.

The next step is to ?make a spreadsheet "time log", ideally for a month, of how you spend every moment. ?Afterwards, you can color in blocks of time spent on similar tasks and analyze the results for time spent inappropriately on activities that are not in "alignment" with your goals. This should be no surprise to the veteran self-improver. ?Books on financial reform always tell you to start by creating a budget and writing down every teensy thing you spend money on. ?Diet programs always insist that you make a note of every morsel that makes its way into your mouth. ?If you live life at full throttle, as I do, it's a real challenge, but you gotta do it. ?I made a time log, and the results were striking.

For one thing, I noticed there were three main areas I was spending excessive time on, that were doing nothing whatsoever to further my goals in life.?

1. Looking for lost stuff. ?One of these time management books quoted some study that showed that the average American spends 1-2 hours a day looking for misplaced or lost items. ?I was proud and delighted to observe that once again, I was an overachiever! Still, thinking there might be something to it,? I immediately went to the hardware store and bought stronger locks for the cages on Silas' "pets". ?No more lost 'possums in this house!!!
2. Sleep. ?Now, these time management books tend to advance the claim that getting more sleep leads to better time management, because it increases efficiency. ?Pshaw! ?I can't imagine a stronger example of unproductive time. ?I solved this problem once and for all by stocking up on "Purecaf", a totally kick-a** product. ?It's liquid caffeine that can be added to anything- Milk! ?Beer! Or drink it straight in shotglasses! ?It's like edible rocket fuel and I completely swear by it now. ?(Free shipping on gallon sizes!!!)
3. Now this one came as a shocker- making a time log! ?This was really eating up gobs of my time. ?Who knew?

Lastly, it was time to get down to business and actually do some of the things I have to do, but not before "letting go of perfectionism". ?This was such a hard one for me! ?Naturally, I felt that if something is worth doing, it's worth doing right. ?And therefore if I couldn't do it right, I might as well not do it. ?Of course this is totally wrongheaded. ?Sometimes it's best to just throw everything in the washing machine, or the dish washer, or the microwave, and hope for the best. ?One way to tackle perfectionism is to schedule an activity and set a timer. ?You know the old adage, "the task expands to fill the available time"? ?So true. ?So if I decide ahead of time on a reasonable amount of time to complete a task, or at least get it started, set a timer, and stick to it, I'm often shocked how much I get done in a relatively short amount of time. ?Of course, this took some getting used to on my part. ?With my veins full of "Purecaf", the ceiling of our home is now full of indentations from where I banged into it every time the timer startled me out of my wits!!!

But I did get used to it. ?And I triumphed! That very year, Verna won the Scat Homeschool Identification Tournament in the Kindergarten division, and Silas taxidermed his very first xenarthra, in a winningly lifelike pose. ?Of course, I give full credit to their genius for their achievements, but having time to fully pursue them was definitely key. ?And you can triumph too! ?Now go get busy on your time log, and stay feral, everyone!

IBD and Colon Cancer Link - Los Angeles Colon and Rectal ...

Patients with IBD, like Crohn?s disease or ulcerative colitis are at an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. The connection between these conditions has been established for years, though researchers still debate the exact cause of the comorbidity.

Colon Cancer Risk: Is it written in Your DNA?

A team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has recently discovered a potential link between inflammation and colon cancer that is in the DNA of the diseased patient. More specifically, it is possible that certain types and degrees of inflammation may cause damage to the DNA, leading to cell mutation and eventually cancer.

The chronic bowel inflammation that marks IBD causes destruction of bacteria and enzymes that are responsible for repairing damage in the intestines. These three enzymes include AAG, ALKBH3 and ALKBH3. When at least one of these enzymes is present, tissue is able to be repaired as normal. A lack of all three enzymes resulted in the inability to repair the damaged tissue, a factor that is understood to play a large role in the development of colon cancer.

Since colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related mortalities in the U.S and an increasing number of inflammatory bowel disease patients are likely to develop the disease the longer they live with the disease, any insight into the link between IBD and colon cancer is highly regarded. This research suggests a potential for identifying colon cancer risk before the disease begins to develop by detecting DNA changes prior to the onset of polyps or precancerous growths in the intestinal lining.

Unfortunately, such advances are still years away. While this study reveals an exciting potential link between the conditions, it was only conducted on mice and has not yet been confirmed in IBD or colon cancer patients. Researchers hope that insight like this will eventually decrease the rate of mortality among IBD patients, but in the meantime it stands as a reminder to keep up with your cancer screenings and other preventative treatment measures.

While the risk of developing colorectal cancer is higher for IBD patients, having IBD is not synonymous with having a diagnosis of colon or rectal cancers. Being aware of your risk for colon cancer and taking the right steps for preventing the disease by avoiding tobacco, eating a healthy diet and staying in close contact with your colorectal specialist can help you maintain control of your health.

Acer H6500 Projector Gaming REVIEW | The Art of Gaming: Video ...

Hey All!

It?s been quite a while since my last review, but I was able to get my hands on the Acer H6500.? It?s a portable, bright, entry level projector that supports native 1080p resolution, and the price makes it an appealing option for those wanting a 1080p proejctor on a budget.?? There are many strengths to this projector, but there are some weaknesses that should be considered before purchasing.? Read on to find out how the Acer H6500 holds up in the game room and how it compares to the GT750.? And be sure to read the conclusion!

First, I want to point out that the Acer H6500, physically, is an extremely portable projector.? The only other projector that I have reviewed (excluding pico projectors) that matches the H6500?s portability is the Optoma GT750.? It?s not quite a backpack, but the Acer H6500 includes a carrying case of sorts so you can easily pack it up and bring it anywhere.

Like most projectors in this price range, the Acer H6500 does not have any lens shift.? This means the projector needs to be pretty much centered in respect to the screen.? The H6500 does have keystone correction, but in my opinion, it?s is a feature that should be used to tweak a slightly offset image, and not relied upon as a substitute for lens shift.? \

The Optoma GT750 had an extremely short throw distance which helped make up for it having no lens shift.? The Acer H6500 does not have this luxury.?? I was forced to table mount the H6500 in the center of my theater room simply because I could not get H6500 to fill my screen in the same position as my Epson 6500UB.?? Just to give you an idea of the space constraints, I was almost able to fill my 100? screen with the Acer at full zoom (~10ft throw).

Once I had placement of the H6500 figured out, I immediately noticed the brightness of the H6500.? Even in its best mode, it is a light cannon!

I also noticed the image was very sharp, noticeably sharper than my 6500UB.? The combination of the brightness and sharpness of this projector in brighter scenes was impressive.? It definitely had a ?wow? factor.

In mixed/darker scenes, the projector did struggle a bit.? As you would expect, because the H6500 projector is so bright, the black levels suffer as a result.? It?s been a while since I?ve had the GT750 in my possession, but if my memory serves, I would say the GT750 has marginally darker overall blacks.? However, I was very impressed with the shadow detail on the H6500.? I don?t recall the GT750 having as much shadow detail.

I usually find that overall black levels and shadow detail go hand in hand, but the H6500 seemed to have very good shadow detail compared to its absolute black level.?? The darker scenes in Resident Evil 5 are my overall black/shadow detail reference and though the over black reference was a dark gray (not an inky black), I didn?t seem lose detail in the shadows as much as many other projectors in this price range.

There aren?t too many calibration options for the H6500.? The color accuracy seemed pretty acceptable in its best mode but the brightest mode didn?t seem to increase lumens enough to justify its awful colors.

This projector is DLP, so Rainbows may be an issue for some.? I was able to see them, barely and rarely, but only if I was looking for them.

I?m pleased to say the Acer H6500 did great with input lag.?? I wasn?t able to detect any lag while playing and I captured 0-30ms (with an average around 15ms) with my camera.? It?s not zero, but it?s definitely one of the faster projectors I?ve taken a look at.

Conclusion:

Overall, I consider the Acer H6500 to be a strong competitor in the entry level projector market.? It gives an extremely sharp, full 1080p image with little input lag and great shadow detail.? But there are a couple basic features missing on the H6500 that prevent it from being spectacular.

In this price range, I can overlook lack of 3D support and limited placement flexibility.? I can also deal with the mediocre black levels, especially since the projector is extremely bright.?? However, I don?t understand why Acer did not include built in speakers, or more importantly, an ?audio out? connection.

I can understand skipping the built-in speakers (I?ve never been a fan), but this projector comes with a travel bag?it?s meant to be portable! ? Why doesn?t it have an audio output!??? In the end, you can rig something up, but it?s something small that just makes things more simple when you are moving the projector around.

Acer H6500 OR Optoma GT750?

It?s a tough call?? The Acer H6500 gives you full 1080p. The Optoma GT750 sports 720p with 3D support.?? Personally, I think 2D 1080p trumps 3D 720p, abut that?s just my opinion.? The Optoma gives both built in speakers as well as an audio out connection, while the Acer has neither?which could prove to be a pain depending on where you are using the projector.???? In the end, I think it?s a simple question of lifestyle.?? If you think your projector is going to stay at home most of the time, I think the H6500 will consistently throw a better image -? primarily because it is full 1080p resolution.? If you are going to be moving your projector around fairly often, and want something you can setup anywhere ? the GT750 wins.

Washington, DC had the most property crimes per capita in 2010 with more than 4% of the population being effected. After DC, the 5 worst states for property crimes in 2010 according to the FBI were:

1.South Carolina
2.Texas
3.Washington State
4.Tennessee
5.Louisiana

The State of Georgia is next on the list after Louisiana as one of the worst states in the US for property crimes in 2010. The 5 best states with the least property crimes in 2010 were:

1.North Dakota
2.South Dakota
3.New York
4.Idaho
5.New Jersey

Though property crimes are not a representation of all crimes in a state, this category represents the largest variable for determining property values and their fluctuation relative to crime statistics. Choosing to live in the "wrong" town can cause loss in property values or property. Some people do not have a choice, but one's knowledge about their surroundings is important. Policy-makers must also take note so they can adjust budget allocations from ineffective uses to crime control.

There are cities where crime is the unfortunate product of heavy commerce mixed with a high population of poverty-level citizens. Loss of jobs lead to increased crime, while new laws and threats cause additional work-loads on justice department staff. Priorities must be considered when determining the most important crimes to fight. Property values are important, but large-impact crimes typically take primary focus. The damage to the World Trade Center property on 9/11/01 had a large impact and investigations continue.

Companies such as Wackenhut (G4S) and Command Security Corporation would potentially consider locating offices and marketing efforts in states reporting high crime. G4S stock (BG) has almost doubled in the past year, an incremental increase along with crime and security threats. G4S can be considered a market index for the Security industry. Though stock values are not always an exact representation of a company's profits, specific industry leaders that report consistent price value increases over a year are shown to be a representation of an industry or macro-economic trend. By comparing the performance over the past year with the performance of other sectors, one can find similarities that can be used for market forecasting.

Whatever one has as a reason to study crime statistics, their effectiveness must be considered. Too much focus on one source of statistics or a single type of statistic may cause innacurate assumptions and/or conclusions. The crime level of a state must also be weighted by the economic opportunities of a state before concluding property values. Local crime rates may be high, such as in DC, but other real estate factors such as historical value, proximity to employment, and cool neighborhoods play as important roles in determining property relevance in each state and city.

Rogers Communications Q2 operating profit beats market ...

Telephony, internet services and cable TV group (TSE:RCI, NYSE:RCI) reported second quarter adjusted operating profits slightly above market consensus, supported by what the company called ?exceptionally strong margins? in both the wireless and cable businesses.

For the three months to end-June 2012, Rogers made adjusted operating profit of C$1.276 billion, or 91 cents a share, beating the market consensus of 86 cents for the period.

The figures compared to C$1.244 billion, or 86 cents, a year earlier.

Revenues rose slightly year-on-year to C$3.106 billion from C$3.097 billion.

Wireless data revenue grew by 13 percent and it added a net 87,000 postpaid subscribes, helping drive wireless data revenue to now comprise 39 percent? of Wireless network revenue compared to 35 percent in the same quarter last year.

Wireless activated 629,000 smartphones in the quarter, of which approximately 36 perecent were new subscribers.

This resulted in subscribers with smartphones, who typically generate ARPU (average revenue per user) nearly twice that of voice only subscribers, representing 63 percent of the overall postpaid subscriber base as at June 30, up from 48 percent at the same time last year, the company added.

DETROIT (AP) ? Miguel Cabrera's 300th homer cleared the wall in center field with room to spare and sailed toward the ivy at Comerica Park.

That's not the easiest place to retrieve a baseball, but this one should make a nice keepsake.

"Somebody got it. They got it somehow," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "They got in there and got it, and that's his 300th, so I'm sure they'll take care of it for him."

Cabrera homered twice to reach another milestone in his remarkable career, and the Tigers finished a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a 6-4 victory Sunday. Detroit wrapped up a 6-1 homestand against the White Sox and Los Angeles Angels and now leads the AL Central by 1? games over Chicago. The White Sox have lost five straight.

Cabrera became the second Venezuela-born player to reach 300 home runs. Andres Galarraga hit 399.

"For my country, yes, it's very special," Cabrera said. "Hopefully a lot of players can follow from Venezuela and try hitting 300 more."

Quintin Berry and Brennan Boesch also homered for Detroit to help rookie Jacob Turner (1-1) earn his first career win. Four relievers pitched for the Tigers, with Joaquin Benoit working a perfect ninth for his second save of the year.

Detroit closer Jose Valverde has been dealing with a balky back and did not pitch.

Philip Humber (4-5) allowed six runs in three innings. Alex Rios and Kevin Youkilis homered for the White Sox.

The Tigers have won 16 of 21.

Turner, Detroit's rookie right-hander, bounced back after giving up seven runs in two innings in his last start against the Angels. He went 5 1-3 innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. He struck out three without a walk before being lifted after Rios hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

"I think the biggest difference is just being more aggressive, attacking the hitters and not really worrying about who might be at the plate, but just going right after them," Turner said.

Cabrera and the Detroit offense provided plenty of support. After an RBI single in the top of the first by Rios, the Tigers scored three runs in the bottom half before Humber retired a batter. Berry's two-run homer gave Detroit the lead, and Cabrera followed with a high drive that cleared the fence just to the left of center field for home run No. 299.

"I picked the wrong day to get balls up in the zone," Humber said. "The stuff was there, but when you are facing that team, and especially that team when they are hot, your stuff doesn't matter if you leave it up."

Cabrera's second homer, in the third inning, was even longer. It ended up around where a camera platform is set up beyond the wall in center. A Tigers spokesman, citing ESPN Stats and Info, said it was estimated at 457 feet.

"Dude has some of the most ridiculous pop I've ever seen," Berry said. "His smooth swing, to be able to go that high up and dead center, it's amazing. It's fun to watch. He does it in BP and he does it in the game. It's unreal."

It was Cabrera's 23rd homer of the year, and he became the 14th player to reach 300 before turning 30, according to STATS, LLC. Cabrera was 29 years, 95 days old Sunday. When Hank Aaron was that age, he had 309 home runs, according to STATS. Barry Bonds had 222 by that age.

Boesch added a two-run shot later in the third to make it 6-1. Humber allowed seven hits and a walk with no strikeouts. He's 3-5 with a 7.55 ERA since pitching a perfect game at Seattle on April 21.

The White Sox chipped away after Humber was taken out. Rios' hit was ruled a homer after umpires consulted replay footage, and Youkilis hit a solo shot off Phil Coke in the seventh.

Octavio Dotel, the third Detroit reliever, came on with one out and a man on in the seventh and retired all five hitters he faced, with four strikeouts.

The White Sox were swept in a series for the first time all season.

NOTES: Coke was pitching for the first time since his wife gave birth to a baby girl. Mickenzie LouAnn was born Saturday morning. ... The Tigers could afford to go deep into their bullpen with an off day coming up Monday. Chicago hosts Minnesota, with RHP Gavin Floyd (7-8) returning from a problem with his throwing elbow to start against Minnesota LHP Francisco Liriano (3-9).
