ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) -- Democratic Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill says the nation's economy could work to her advantage in her re-election bid against Republican congressman Todd Akin.
McCaskill cited new figures Friday showing that the nation's unemployment rate was below 8 percent, which she said was an indication that "we're going in the right direction."
McCaskill held a news conference at a Kansas City, Mo., employment office to highlight Akin's opposition to the federal minimum wage.
Among those supporting Akin is former Republican presidential candidate and political commentator Mike Huckabee. Huckabee urged pastors gathered near Kansas City to implore their congregations to vote on what he called "eternal" issues such as abortion and gay marriage.
