Cheerleading: Blue Devils take it from the top | Sun Journal

The Lewiston Blue Devils reached a pinnacle that no Maine high school cheering squad had ever attained when they won the New England Championship cheerleading crown last season.

So what will the Lewiston Blue Devils do for an encore performance this season?

?Do it again, do it again,? Lewiston cheerleading coach Lynnette Morency said with a laugh. ?One of the biggest things that I am working with the team this year is the knowledge that we want to do it again, but we want to do it by a larger margin.

?We want to be that much better. If we do what we are supposed to do, and we hit the routine that is the way it is choreographed, and we execute it at top-notch level, then our scores will be that much higher than in the past.?

The Blue Devils can?t wait to jump at the chance to win another New England crown. Last season, Lewiston completed a second consecutive sweep in conference, regional and state competitions.

Of course, the Blue Devils plan to mix it up this time around. They hired a new choreographer from California to give Lewiston a new look.

Nothing will be routine about the Devils this season.

?We have a couple of tricks up our sleeves,??Morency said.? ?For me, I wanted to change it up before it bit us in the butt, if that makes sense. A new choreographer will spice it up and change things around.

?We want to live up to our reputation," she said. "We want to put on a good show, entertain everybody. We want to give people what they came to see. I have a very specific style that I like with my high school teams. My program is a very motion driven, athletic program.?

Collecting another state or New England title is certainly within reach for the Blue Devils, who still have one of the most experienced squads in Class A. A majority of Morency?s seniors, juniors and sophomores will be back bouncing across the floor.

"We are always trying to put out something new every year that?s creative, that nobody else is doing,??Morency said. ?It may not always be necessarily hard. I think some people come to see the wild factor in our routines.

?The rules of high school cheering have changed so we are getting so many more liberties to do front flips and back flips. It makes it exciting to watch.?

Senior Kirsty Beauchesne is fine with Lewiston?s new look and is confident about winning another New England title.

?I don?t think that we lost that many girls and our program is still strong,??Beauchesne said. ?I think it is time for change. I think it will be something they have never seen before. I am looking for another undefeated season, hopefully.?

A new routine works for senior Kara Barnies.

?We have some new changes that the team is really excited about,??Barnies said. ?We like challenges and pushing ourselves and keep on improving ourselves.?

That winning attitude helps explain why the Blue Devils have come out on top the past few seasons.
